The Unfinished Obelisk was commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut but during the quarrying of the stone it was observed that there was a crack and therefore unusable. Hence it is still lying where it was originally hewn from the rock. Should this obelisk have been finished it would have weighed 2.5 million pounds and would have been the world's largest peice of stone ever handled. However once the crack was observed the work was abandoned. Tools left by its builders have given us insight as to how the work of quarrying and cutting was performed.
